21GRAMS | Urban Balkan Bistro "Tasting Menu"

We’re so lucky to have independent and intimate restaurants such as these on our doorsteps. They are such an inspiration for us to have the opportunity to eat fantastic food that you know has been made with a lot of heart and soul! They are truly unique, and we’re just sometimes a little sad we can’t have a glass of wine to pair with the very special dishes we eat.

This 6-platter tasting menu is sublime, and very generous given that it’s only AED240 per person. It was far too difficult to declare a favourite, as each one offered a creative and sumptuous statement by 21grams’ Chef, but if we absolutely had to choose, it would be between the grilled octopus salad and the smoked trout.

Needless to say, we will be opting to try this menu all over again just for the re-discovery.

Beetroot Salad
Polenta Cake with asparagus, crispy beef bacon and black truffles
Grilled Octopus Salad

The course is opened with a beautifully light Beetroot Salad with a very subtle and fluffy goat’s cheese mousse and hazelnuts, followed by a delicious Polenta Cake with asparagus, crispy beef bacon (I may try to recreate this one with pork bacon at home) and black truffles. The Grilled Octopus Salad that comes up next is done to perfection. I can sometimes be put off by the chewy texture of octopus, but this perfectly cooked, combo and presentation just ensured a want for seconds. The dressing was superb.

Smoked Trout
Stuffed Bell Pepper with Wagyu beef and the light, creamy and airy celery purée.

The main course of Smoked Trout is simply fabulous. The trout sits on a delicate crêpe tuile atop a very tasty portion of baked sauerkraut, and the dish is topped off with a sprinkle of walnuts. Getting very full at this stage, I wanted this dish to never end. Alas it does, and it leaves a lasting impression (as I clearly still think of it) and we are then served the lovely Stuffed Bell Pepper with Wagyu beef and the light, creamy and airy celery purée.

The Gomboce dessert is sweet dumplings with stewed prunes and a wonderful crumble and berried yoghurt dressing.

The dessert has been well thought of, knowing there would be some very full bellies to attend to. The Gomboce are sweet dumplings with stewed prunes and a wonderful crumble and berried yoghurt dressing. Quite heavenly and yes, you’ll manage to finish every last bite.

This menu has really been a treat and one we highly recommend. Advanced bookings are needed in order to taste these scrumptious dishes. I think I may just be making one again myself…
